My advice for students and fellow graduates is that don't expect too much when you start job hunting. Having a British degree can put you in a better position, but it cannot guarantee that you will get the perfect job. A lot depends on your determination. Try to get some work placements in the UK before going back to your own country. Almost all bosses like to see experience listed on your CV, and experience of working overseas is an excellent addition.
The MA course at NTU requires some self-study. In China we are used to following rules made by the schools and adults in China and hardly question what we are taught, but the learning environment at NTU enabled me to challenge things. The sentence I heard quite often is "Why not?. I have learned how to develop critical thinking and appreciate personal opinion. It has been very helpful for my career.
I had six years work experience in Chinese media doing various jobs such as a broadcaster, TV presenter and journalist. In particular being a newspaper reporter is my favourite job, so I decided to study the MA in Newspaper Journalism at NTU.
The journalism skills course I did at NTU is quite practical, especially the news week. Everybody has a chance to be "chief editor" or "reporter" or do layout, before receiving feedback from a tutor the following week. It broadened my knowledge about how a western news room works, and gave me experience of how to work as a reporter in a foreign country. When I returned to China, the competition for jobs was far fiercer than I had imagined, so at first I worked as a part-time English teacher for a local language school whilst sending my CV to various companies. Fortunately, I got a job in Beijing, working as an editorial assistant for Le Nouvel Observateur Beijing Bureau, but I soon realised that the job required more administrative work than journalism work so I left for Shanghai where I started to work for China Daily Shanghai and East China headquarters.
