I transferred to Plymouth after completing a year at Leeds Metropolitan after the promise of a Resort based placement fell through, I came down to Plymouth Business School (PBS) wanting to join the Cruise Operation course, however it was starting in the following year, and it would have meant completing my first year again - I was persuaded to join the Hospitality Management course, here I was offered the opportunity to complete an industrial placement onboard the QE2, and returned afterwards to complete my degree and never looked back!
I worked onboard the QE2 for two six month contracts, rotating round the restaurants, bars, accommodation and pursers department. When I joined I spent six weeks in the White Star Academy, a training school onboard, undertaking a general company induction, which involved studying and exams which having passed, I then went into the rotation scheme. I spent approximately three months as an assistant waiter in the main restaurants, then moved to the purser's department and spent time as a receptionist, as well as time with the manifest officer, crew, accounts and nights manager. Upon returning for my second contract I worked in the public rooms, as a public rooms steward (bar waitress) and then progressed onto assistant bar tender, after three months I moved into the accommodation department as a bedroom steward. My preferred department was the purser's office, and the hardest role was my time as a bedroom stewardess, I came home from my contract and slept for about two weeks! I spent a year traveling the world; I have been to some incredible destinations, from the Americas to Australia, The Falkland Islands to Hong Kong and Singapore, and from the very warm Caribbean to a very cold Canada! Looking back it was the placement that confirmed my choice of career, and although the cruise industry as a career had occurred to me whilst studying hospitality it wasn't until I came home for my final year, I realized I was itching to get back to sea. During my final year I tailored some of my module choices to correspond with my goals, and quite heavily on the customer service programs and business modules, in order to give a better grounding of the financial and business operations side of the industry. With support from the lecturers at PBS I would not have found my chosen career path, and certainly would not have had the opportunity to travel the world before turning 21.
My time at Plymouth opened my eyes to the many opportunities available to a graduate within the hospitality Industry. I enjoyed my time there, and made many friends at the University, the city is an ideal place to study with an eclectic mix of people, places, nightlife and scenery providing an incredible setting to many a university student.
I left Plymouth University the day after graduation and joined M V Aurora two days later, I am now on my second contract with P&O and again traveling round the world, I write this having just left Bora Bora on my way down to New Zealand! It is the destinations and discovery that made me want to join the cruise industry. The atmosphere on a cruise ship cannot compare to anything on land!
