I really enjoy the atmosphere of Adelaide Uni. If there's not a free bbq on the lawns theres a band playing or its student elections. Its great being in the city too and being so close to rundel mall and my bus stop! I like not having to travel between campuses either which saves a lot of time and energy and gives a feeling of belonging.
This wasn't really a problem for me. I applied during yr 12 and because by TER score was high enough I got in. Then the uni sent me all the info I needed about enrolment and orientation week and I was set!
I only found out this year that i could have been eligible for a scholarship because of my high TER score but no one told me! Apparently there are scholarships out there if you look but I dont think there are any specific ones for my course.
I really love my course! Because its quite specific Ive been having lectures and tutorials with the same gruop of people for two years. This means I've been able to create a strong network of friends who can support me and I can support as we experience the same things. I've found that Ive made more friends at uni then people who have studied more general arts or science degrees who have hundreds of people in the same course. I've also found the lecturers and tutors in my course very friendly helpful and supporting. A lot of them are practising architects or landscape architects who can share there experiences with you too. One thing i think should be different is the name of the course. While it is called design studies the core courses are very much focused on architecture and landscape architecture. Thise who want to focus on digital media still have to learn about construction and architecture history which I personally found very interestign but would not be everyones cup of tea. I think there is a good balance of computer and hand drawing skills with the oportunities to chose your prefered medium as you progress. Although its great not having exams do not think this course will be easy! Its a lot of hands on work (ie making models drawing) and a bit of theory (I've only had to write 3 or 4 essays in 2 years!). Most projects have to be orally presented as well so you quickly get used to talking in front of a group. For the first year and a half I chose to do an elective outside the school which was okay but it meant i missed out on some courses that could have been useful. 'Imaging our World' in first year was meant to be a really useful elective and everyone would did it can make the best powerpoints and posters!(which is very useful in this course!) Overall I am very happy with my course and what it has taught me so far.
I love Adelaide and love studying in the city. There is always somewhere to grab a bite to eat at uni or if you want more choice rundel mall. The computer labs are open 24/7 which comes in handy but they can get full near the end of semester when everything is due. The ol' library is a great resource too and the smell of old books makes you feel very academic! There's plenty of part time work in the city and the uni has a service which can help you find one. Im not sure about accomodation I live off campus and travel tot he city everyday.
Because a lot of the lecturers and tutors are practising in the profession as well there are opportunities for work around if you are willing to ask. Even as you are studying there is work available. I feel comfortable that I will be able to find work by the time my degree is complete if not before.
