After finishing my degree, I took on a fulltime position in the finance department at the company where I did my internship. However, I was attracted by the offer of upgrade my Bachelors degree to a Masters qualification at the University of Plymouth (UoP). I first heard about the UoP when talking to a friend of a friend in Germany some years ago, he was doing an MSc in Logistics and highly recommended Plymouth as a place to study. I chose to do the MSc Business & Management at the Plymouth due to a range of factors that included the cost of living, career prospects, tuition fees, the accommodation and the chance to top-up the MSc to an MBA.
The lecturers were very supportive and tried to help wherever they could. The open door policy made it possible that students were able to meet and ask questions on any queries for the particular subject and the whole course, I felt the teaching quality was very high on my course. What I most liked about it was that lecturers were really trying to get their knowledge across to the students!
Although Plymouth is one of the biggest universities in the UK all its buildings were close to where all the students lived. This made it easy to meet up any time, especially for group projects. Some of the buildings are brand new. The environment at Plymouth was very special - which made me feel part of something and proud to have studied there. I was the student and course representative for the MSc Business & Management course while doing my studies. I finished the course in March 2008 and will graduate in September. The Masters course has given me the opportunity to work and study with students from fifteen different countries. From my point of view this has been an important attribute to the theoretical part of the course, since working habits are very different from country to country. In a global business environment it is of great value to have worked on projects with people from different cultural backgrounds, especially in terms of resolving conflicts - I made many friends in Plymouth. With all the skills I have obtained, and the self-confidence I have gained and all the friends I made I would definitely recommend going to Plymouth.
Now, having finished my postgraduate studies I have found a job in the USA. I have recently taken up a new trainee post with UBS - where I am working for the mortgage origination department and then moving on to the fixed income securities department. I hope to be able to excel in this position with the technical skills as well as personal qualities I have obtained as a result of my studies. During the Masters I have gained analytical, team working and problem solving skills as well as commercial awareness which seem to me crucial attributes in business life. I am of the opinion that with the qualities, experience and knowledge gained from my time at Plymouth I am able to contribute significantly to any company I am attached to as an employee and am well prepared to face many challenges during my future career.
