I did the BSc (Hons) International Relations programme here at the University of Plymouth. During my first two years at University I lived and studied in Plymouth during the week and worked weekends in Somerset as a children's fitness instructor to fund trips around both Europe and Southeast Asia. This is perhaps one of the best things about university; it affords you the freedom to do other things while you study as long as you manage your time effectively. In my final year I chose not to work so as to concentrate fully on my studies whilst giving me sufficient down-time.
In all honesty I did not really know what to expect from the subject because like most people I had not heard of it before. I literally read the synopsis on the University web page and thought it sounded good. As it turned out I could not have chosen better. From the very start it enthralled me as it continues to do now. It would be fair to say that the IR community at the University of Plymouth is fairly intimate and consequently you are well supported by your lecturers and peers.
The learning environment here was just what I needed, on the one hand challenging and serious, but on the hand supportive and comparatively informal. For these reasons I decided I wanted to return as a post-graduate. During my final year I went through the very competitive application process to procure the funding from the Economic and Social Research Council that would enable me to continue my studies. At times the process was rather stressful because I already had a lot on my plate in my final year. However I had great support from my supervisors and it was well worth it because now I have secured funding and I am able to study for another four years towards a Masters and a PhD and get paid along the way. My ideal job! Ultimately I think I would like to forge a long term career in academia, however in four years time I may have changed my mind. For now I simply intend to keep enjoying myself. I would thoroughly recommend university and Plymouth was perfect for me. However, the university and the course you choose are entirely personal, as should be the decision to go to university in the first place.
