University Of Florida is a nice warm place to be. 8 out of 10 , 10 being the best possible scenario !!!

I had to take GRE for which I prepared using Standard testing material like Barrons , Kaplan , etc. I did not attend any coaching classes for the tests, nor did I use the services of educational counselors. I needed a visa but the Visa interview was uneventful without any questions being asked (probably because my school was ranked 12th in the nation for the program and people going to high ranked schools have an easier ride). It was difficult to get the tickets, the earlier process was delayed due to some inaccurate paperwork. I ended up flying Lufthansa to Washington and US Airways from there to Orlando, which was a pretty long but good flight. Student fares were provided. The airport was 2 hour ride from my school but there were airport shuttles plying the route. Excess baggage was allowed and I passed without any immigration issues at PoE. The univ did not have any Meet & Greet but the Indian Students Association had made it an yearly ritual to bring in the juniors.

I was offered a Achievement award from India which gave me a 33% waiver. But after the first semester I got a Graduate assistantship which gave me 100% waiver and a monthly stipend.

Compared to other programs , the one that I’m enrolled is just a decade old and in quite a nascent stage. They keep improving with every semester. The only qualm that I have is that the program uses industry feed back to structure its course work and hence the whole course seems like a grandiose feeder program to these big 4 companies , i.e the window for innovation is not inherently present.

I stayed at private rented accommodation. The university dorms fill out early but lot of us move into them in the later semesters. It is the largest public schools in US. So we have the best in terms of student recreation and engagement. Not very difficult to get part time jobs. There are quite a few opportunities available. Weather is Unpredictable, like Florida weather is supposed to be! There are couple of Indian associations active ISA, SPICMCAY, GSA…etc. Almost all festivities are celebrated with full pomp along with associated traditions that go with it.

CRC (Career Resource Centre) is the placement cell which does quite an excellent job. With the economic slowdown, internationals are having a tough time. Both the alumni and industry take active participation in every college event by way of tons of info-Sessions and Career fairs.
