I completed my Masters of Engineering in Micro electronics at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. The program was a joint venture between for universities, RMIT functioned as the host university therefore they awarded me my degree. The three other universities which were involved in this joint venture were the La Trobe University, Victoria University or Vic Uni (as it is fondly referred) and Swinburne University.
The program is supported by the local association of electronic engineering. One thing that prospective students have to keep in mind before choosing this program is the fact that you need industrial backing to do this program. The key issue which made me choose this particular program over others is the fact that it provided good value for money. As part of the course students have an option to work on real time projects. Students spend almost six months of the program working on actual real time industrial projects. We used to hop around all four universities and interacted with professors and lecturers at all the universities. This was great because we were able to nteract with a lot of academicians. There were some bottlenecks in terms of infrastructure for this program back then, but that primarily might have been because of the fact that I was part of one of the earliest batches for this program (I joined in Feb 2003) ¿things may have slightly changed since though. The course fee when we joined in 2003 was 24800 AUD for 18 months. The course was value for money.
I stayed in a private accommodation and had absolutely no problems. Part time jobs are easy to get in Melbourne. There is no restriction on students to work on campus. One can work off campus as well. As long as you stick to your 20 hours restriction per week you are fine. Living expenses depend on the individual. Usually an average guy spends anywhere between 800-1200 Aussie dollars per month.
With this course as a fresher it is difficult to get jobs. You have opportunities to do internships with companies and this will help you in terms of job prospects. The job prospects in Melbourne for this course are not great. I diversified and moved on to do Marketing in the telecom industry. I would recommend this course to other Indian students. It was a good exposure for me.
