I grew up just outside of Southampton in Hampshire. After finishing school I chose to study both French and Spanish at Sixth Form College and I have just graduated with a BA Hons in Modern Languages with International Relations from the University of Plymouth. Since the age of fifteen, I have always managed to combine my studies with part-time jobs ranging from a retail assistant to receptionist; however, I gave up working in my final year of university to fully concentrate on my degree. Currently, I live in Nantes in France, where I'm working as an English 'lectrice' (assistant teacher) in l'université de Nantes.
I found out about the course at an open day where I was provided with plenty of information about the language department, the language courses and the combination courses that were on offer at the University. During my time at the University of Plymouth the staff were always supportive and also, were generally always available to help answer questions.
Although it's difficult to pinpoint my main motivation in deciding to study languages, I knew from a very early age that I wanted to travel. I come from a fairly multi-cultural family and I have always been inspired by those who speak numerous languages. Plus, I've always loved going on holiday and being able to converse with the locals. I suppose what predominantly attracted me to the University of Plymouth was the opportunity to combine studying both the French and Spanish languages and cultures with International Relations, therefore, giving a little more depth to my degree and improving my knowledge of current affairs.
I've had a fantastic time studying languages at Plymouth. Learning a language is a skill for life, I have no doubt that I will put the language and time-management skills I've learnt at Plymouth to good use in the future, wherever and whatever I end-up doing. The University campus and the city of Plymouth have a great vibe and I would recommend both the University and the language courses to anyone.
