Love the course, its been put together really well, I love that we not only learn in a classroom environment, but get to experience hands on learning outside on the fields and using the gym facilities at the Uni for PE subjects.
It was easy for me to get in, because I got the UAI. However, I had a gap year, so in my first year I think they doubled the intake, which is weird because there are no jobs for PE teachers as it is, yet they let heaps more people in.
I have received a Commonwealth Equity Scholarship because I am from the country and had to move away to go to uni which has been excellent because accommodation and textbook fees are very expensive, and this money means I dont have to worry about finding a job yet, I can just concentrate on my studies. Tips to get them: if you dont qualify for a scholarship based on your parents income, DEFINITELY have a gap year and become independent.
My study load barely exceeds 13 hours a week. Its ridiculous that my course is over 4 years, its too long, and could definitely be reduced to 2.5 or 3 years, but adding another unit per semester. This workload is extremely achievable, because even adding another unit wouldnt make it full-time (I used to work over 50 hours a week sometimes in my gap year, and still had time for other things, so 13 hours a week means I get very bored.) I would much rather cram more into 3 years than do the extra year. Lectures are not that great, if you can get them off the internet, why bother going anyway? Tutorials are excellent, however, some of the PE tutorials do not need to be 2 hours long, 1 hour is sufficient.
The facilities on campus arent great. Unless you are living at a college, there is no social life. Also, there is too much division within the campus as there are 2 sides. It is, however, good having all my classes in the Hunter building, so Im torn there. I havent joined any clubs because they all seem like a waste of time or weird.
I hate how they tell us that there are no jobs for PE teachers, and that a degree isnt enough anymore, you have to get your Austswim cert and your bronze medallion etc etc etc. A degree better be enough, because I know I dont have the money for all these extra things. Hopefully Ill get a job as Im willing to go anywhere (except Sydney), and am especially interested in going back to the country.
