My area of specialization is Experimental study of fluid flow instabilities. I work at the Department of Mathematics and Manchester Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics in the University of Manchester. My thesis is being supervised by Dr. Anne Juel who is a senior lecturer at the school of mathematics. I am expecting to complete it in November 2008.
I completed my MS from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore. I had a CGPA of 6.8 on 8. I had also worked as a Research and development assistant at the Fluid Mechanics unit there.
I have been awarded the Overseas Research Student Award (ORS) by the Secretary of State for Education and Science, UK, and the School of Mathematics Scholarship, by the University of Manchester, to pursue my PhD.
My PhD research problem is on interfacial capillary-gravity waves. The capillary-gravity waves are generated as a shear instability at the interface of two immiscible liquids under external oscillatory forcing. The onset characteristics of the instability were experimentally studied, including the effect of viscosity and the results compared to a 2-D linear stability model to find an excellent agreement. This proved its credibility. The nonlinear growth of the interfacial wave was studied using a specifically developed laser visualisation system. By analysing the Fourier components of the wave, we could show that the wave undergoes a transformation from a weakly to a strongly nonlinear wave for a critical forcing value, at which the gravity forces balance capillary forces. A further bifurcation to 3-D waves of the interface is also being studied.
Manchester is a multicultural town where everything is available. In terms of part time jobs, I have also worked as a Teaching Assistant at The University of Manchester for the following undergraduate courses: Numerical Linear Algebra; Partial Differential Equations and Special Functions ; Physics of Fluids; Mathematical Methods for Engineers and Computer Proficiency Course.
