Having recently completed an LLB Hons at the University of Plymouth, I have returned to the School of Law and Social Science at the University to study for a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, as it is my intention to become a solicitor. My background is unusual I guess, in that my pathway into the law has been somewhat convoluted, but given that I am a mature student perhaps that is inevitable. However, I feel now that I am here, it is as if at last I am professionally, a round peg in a round hole and writing that makes me smile, because it's the truth and I can no longer deny it. As I had been diagnosed with a disabling injury at work six years ago, which has meant that there have been times in examinations where I have had to rely on a scribe, whom I have then had to dictate my work to under timed conditions, which was a bit of an added challenge. However, the university's Disability Assist Service have been superb in facilitating me with the necessary help, and quite simply, without it I could not have completed my degree, because I had to pass my exams
Whilst studying on the course there were a number of events that complemented my studies. I can say that the University of Plymouth Careers Fair is worth attending for its eclectic mix of potential employers. The Pilgrims Father Lecture held once a year is always a treat for law students and then there is the Law and Criminal Justice Society which is a thread that runs throughout much of the fabric of the LLB course and is some may say, essential to enabling students without any legal contacts, help make the first step in securing some. The impression I have from local firms is that the LLB programme at the University of Plymouth is held in high regard, not only academically, but also for the way in which it prepares students for the practicalities of working in the law via the Lawyers Skills module, which is an added bonus in terms of employability.
I would highly recommend legal study at the University of Plymouth. It is great value for money and the lecturers are really approachable and incredibly talented. The LLB Hons programme is rich in its diversity and I have studied a wide range of electives. The facilities are superb, the campus is right in the city centre and next to the railway and bus stations. Dartmoor is behind you and the Sound in front, what more could you ask for? Surfing is available at Whitsand Bay in Cornwall, a bus ride away and Newquay and the north coast is less than an hour away by car. If you have any inclinations to learn to sail, then you can at the University's own sailing and water sports centre.
