My advice to all future students is that you need to be focused. Cornell. The MMH will open a lot of doors for you (both educationally and professionally) and you need to be focused about what you want to let through your filter, and what you need to walk away from. It can all be a little bit overwhelming at the start. Keep focused on what you are trying to achieve, and work to better your skill-set with regards to that specific area - its not humanly possible to try to do it all (not well at least).

Before getting here - make sure to pick up the financial skills that you need during the course of the program; the industry will reward you for having a well rounded skill-set.

I was always focused on the area of real estate finance, and so came to Cornell with that goal in mind. I've often been tempted to learn about and become exposed to other areas of interest along the way, but kept my focus throughout and worked to develop my skill-set within this area. Its understandable that you may want to 'shop' (for lack of a better word) interests while in the program, but my suggestion would be to start doing that now. Get into the readings, publications, coursework now to see what you feel about the topics. It may be possible to pursue one or two topics while in the program with success, but to think that you can pursue a variety of core focuses throughout the year and then make a decision at the end would (in my opinion) be an error in judgment. Also realize, that it isn't always easy to truly master an area of study, and one year is not as long of a period of study as you may think so stay focused to your area of interest.
