Initially it seemed like Davis wasn't the place for me because I've always been a city girl and small towns are not for me. But when I came to Davis, I fell in love with nice little town and I am glad I chose to come here. It is a perfect change from the fast pace life of the city because you get to experience so many things that you will never see in a big city. As far as academic advice, I'd say go and discuss your four year plan with a counselor as soon as you start your freshman year, because Davis has so much to offer that unless you talk to a counselor you may not be able to take full advantage of all the various disciplines that are part of the university. And by the time you figure out that you should've double majored in something, it may be too late! Being a Design major I double majored in Business and Marketing, while also taking some Media and Cultural studies classes on the side.
Out of all the UCs, Davis is in the same league as UCLA and UC Berkeley, so it is a little challenging, but that is what makes Davis competitive. Upon coming here, you will find that your peers are very hard working and well-rounded individuals. I am not an international student, so my process was slightly different, but I do have a lot of friends that were international students and all of them chose an academic counselor in their home country who helped them with their application essays and the visa process. So find a good counselor in whatever city you are from, and they will assist you every step of the way.
Because Davis is a very impacted public university, there funds for grants per student tend to be small. But there are a lot of scholarships that one can apply for. There is a center for International students on campus, so once you come here you can get assistance from them because they know about all the scholarship opportunities available for International students.
The greatest thing about any major at UC Davis is the faculty. Because we are a research university, our professors are very proactive about student involvement in projects outside the classroom. They offer many opportunities for hands on learning too. The curriculum is rigorous because we are on the quarter system, but I think it helps prepare us to work well under the pressure of tight deadlines.
Like I mentioned earlier, Davis has a wonderful small-town feel. Downtown Davis is full of small stores and cafes and local restaurants. You will find yourself far away from any chain-clothing stores, instead, you can enjoy shopping in small boutiques. Local people are extremely friendly. Davis has pretty reasonable rent prices for students (you can choose from a wide range of apartment complexes). Freshman are guaranteed residence in the dorms. Our student run coffee house in the Memorial Union is AMAZING! And we have a student run bus system that makes it easy to get to campus if you don't like to bike. In the quad, you will always find a great number of clubs and societies tabling for new members and they are very eager to give you more information.
Definitely! UC Davis is a very well reputed school and companies value a degree from this university. The Internship and Career Center hosts many job fairs and the CAAA (California Aggie Alumni Association) is an extremely useful resource too. I am still a senior, so I am in the process of applying for jobs, but I do have a few leads after attending the job fair last month.
