I am enjoying Newcastle University so far because I have made a lot of friends, and there is a very diverse population with people from all across the world. I have made friends and heard about their stories, which are interesting because they have a completely different way of life to what I am accustomed to. The most important advice is to get out there and do as much as you can, otherwise you might be bored especially if you are moving away from home and don't know anyone in Newcastle.
To study medicine here, I would say that the selection process is easier than universities in Sydney and other major cities. However, it is still competitive. The process for me was as follows: finished my HSC, got a UAI score above the required threshold (which was 95), applied through UAC and put this course as my preference, sat the UMAT exam and attended a personal interview at the uni. I did not require assistance. Advice: do not be late to any interview and plan your transport in advance.
I am not aware of any scholarship or funding opportunities open for myself in my current situation, but I have heard from friends that they have some for international students. You need to work out funding yourself, either work, get support from your parents, or through the government (Youth Allowance etc).
The course is pretty good, although they need to put lectures up on time. Best bits would be the people in my course. I study maybe 15 hours including lectures but it really depends. The lecturers and tutors are mostly interesting, as they offer many perspectives on a topic. I think I have enough support if I need it. Yes it is good value for money.
The uni facilities are alright for medicine, although I think they need to put in more computers because often they are all taken. I enjoy Newcastle because of the people and the laid back atmosphere. My accommodation is good, close to uni but a bit expensive in my opinion ($150 a week). I guess it's possible to find part time work but it's difficult, given the hours always change with Medicine. The Student Union here is quite good, they give you discounts in university shops and activities. I do take part in the Med Society's events, and there are things for international students only but since I am Australian I have not taken part in it.
Yes, if I graduate my job prospects will definitely increase because you need this degree to be a doctor. I hope I will be able to keep in touch with my friends, they are great people. I'm not sure if there is a formal alumni association, but the medicine students are pretty close. Once you complete your course, you do a year of internship at an approved hospital.
